Write about your next vacation

An example from a student’s writing

The student is asked to write about her next vacation, using the grammar and vocabulary she has studied. She needs to use ‘going to’, and maybe the present continuous for the future, and she needs to use vocabulary that we use for travel, such as ‘travel, go by plane, visit and see’. She needs to think about this before she starts writing, and she needs to do a mind map to generate ideas about what she’s going to write about.

She used a list to plan her writing, but a mind map would have given her more to write about.

This is quite good for her level, but why did I cross out some of the things she wrote?

Example

If you want to write anything good you need to plan first. You’re writing for purpose – to practice the language you have been studying. You need to think about the question, the grammar you are going to use, and the vocabulary that you need. This student has done a pretty good job.

Her mind map would have been more useful to her if she had included some of the grammar and vocabulary that she wanted to use, but her writing was pretty good anyway.

Her final mark for this was 97.5%. Good work!
